Download

Download the alpha.

Pigeon is in private alpha. It's early, it's invite-only, and it's for people happy to try something unfinished and tell us what breaks.

You'll need an invite code. Ask someone who already uses Pigeon to make you one. A code works once, and only lets you create an account: it doesn't tell anyone who you are or connect you to the person who made it.

Check your download

Before you install, check that the file you have is the file we published. Each download has a SHA-256 checksum listed above and in a .sha256 file beside it. A checksum appears only with its file: until a build is published, there's none to show, and we never show a placeholder. If the numbers don't match exactly, don't install it; download it again, and if it still doesn't match, tell us.

On Linux

Put the package and its .sha256 file in the same folder, open a terminal there and run:

sha256sum --check pigeon-desktop_*_amd64.deb.sha256

It should print the file name followed by OK. Then install it by double-clicking the .deb (Software Manager on Mint, App Center on Ubuntu), or with:

sudo apt install ./pigeon-desktop_*_amd64.deb

On Windows

Open PowerShell in the folder with the installer and run:

Get-FileHash .\Pigeon*.exe -Algorithm SHA256

Compare the long number it prints with the one on this page. Every character must match (capital or small letters don't matter).

Windows will warn you, and why

The alpha's Windows installer isn't signed with a code-signing certificate yet, so Windows shows a blue “Windows protected your PC” screen when you open it. That screen means Windows doesn't know who made the file. It doesn't mean the file is harmful, but it's also why checking the checksum first matters.

If the checksum matched:

  1. On the “Windows protected your PC” screen, select More info.
  2. Check the file name is the one you downloaded.
  3. Select Run anyway.

A signed installer is coming before the alpha opens wider. Microsoft's mainstream support for Windows 10 has ended, so the computer itself may no longer get security updates; keep that in mind for anything sensitive.

What you need

  • A 64-bit Intel or AMD computer.
  • Linux: Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04, or Linux Mint 21 or 22. Windows: Windows 10.
  • An internet connection, and an invite code.

Pigeon doesn't need a phone number, an email address or any other account.

What “alpha” means here

  • Expect rough edges, and changes that may ask you to start over.
  • It hasn't had an independent security audit yet.
  • Installers aren't signed yet, and updates aren't automatic yet; you'll download new versions from this page.
